RISING SIXTH GRADE
Books may be borrowed or purchased, in print or e-book form. Students in grades 3–8 should read independently; please avoid audiobooks or read-alouds unless listed in an SAP. Parents are encouraged to read along and discuss the stories.
- Book 1: Assigned | Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli
- Read this book by the first day of school and be prepared to discuss characters, setting, and plot. No written project is required.
- Book 2: Student Choice Book + Project
- Students will choose one book from either:
- Rising Sixth Grade Book List
- 2025–2026 Battle of the Books List
- They will then select a project from the project options list and bring it to school on the first day. Projects should be neat, creative, and small in size (no full-size posters; mini displays only, 12"x18"). Projects must remain small enough to store and display for several weeks.
- Mini tri-fold display (14"x22")
- Scrapbook, diorama, or comic strip
- New book jacket
- Diary entries or an alternate ending
- Board game, puppet show, or video scene
- Google Slides / PowerPoint / iMovie presentation
- Poem or song based on the story
- Letter to a character
- Character interview script
- Project Requirements (If your chosen project doesn’t allow room for all items, submit the extra pieces on a separate sheet.
- Every project must include:
- Title and author
- Main characters
- Setting
- Plot summary (beginning, middle/rising action, end/how was the problem solved?)
- One reflection choice (why a friend should read it, a character you relate to, comparison to another book, or connection to your own life)

- Biography Suggested Reading List
