ST. JEROME - PATRON SAINT OF LIBRARIES

Saint Jerome (ca. 345- 30 Sept 420) is the patron saint of libraries! He was a scholar and a priest from the early church with a fiery temper! But his dedication to the study of scripture earned him the title of Doctor of the Church. He is the patron saint of libraries because he translated the Bible into Latin, and this translation, called the “Vulgate,” became the official Bible text of the Church.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

  • Saint Luke School will offer Battle of the Books again in 2025–2026 for interested fifth and sixth graders. This diocesan program invites students to read twelve books throughout the year and compete in a quiz-style tournament each May.
  • Students meet every other week from 11:05-11:50 AM to discuss the books and prepare. In April, Mrs. Manning will select the students who will represent Saint Luke at the diocesan competition; remaining participants will attend as alternates. One copy of each book will be available in the school library, and titles can also be found at public libraries, bookstores, and the fall book fair. Print and e-books are both acceptable.
  • Students are encouraged to start reading over the summer and may use any Battle title for their summer reading project. Taking notes will help them remember key details for the competition.
  • Parents are welcome to volunteer as coaches. Practices are held every other week from 11:50–12:35, covering roughly two books a month. Coaches prepare a small set of questions for group work and discussion, similar to the competition format. The diocesan meet takes place in mid-May.

SUMMER READING

  • Summer reading helps keep skills sharp. We hope our students will enjoy reading at least two books — especially in grades K–3.
  • Students should read at least twenty minutes a day to keep their skills strong.
  • All projects are due on the first day of school and should be turned in to the homeroom teacher.
  • Visit our Summer Reading pages for each grade’s packet, project, and details.
